The Lost Manuscript: A Novel

The Lost Manuscript is a novel by Gustav Freytag, first published in German in 1864. It follows Professor Felix Werner, a dedicated philologist, and his friend Dr. Fritz Hahn as they search for a lost manuscript of Tacitus believed to be hidden in Bielstein Manor since the Thirty Years' War. The narrative explores themes of intellectual ambition, personal growth, and the interconnectedness of human experiences, highlighting the characters' relationships and motivations against the backdrop of academic pursuit and emotional depth. This work aims to depict German university life, similar to Freytag's earlier novel 'Soll und Haben.'
