The Life of Sir Isaac Newton

David Brewster, who knew Newton in the scientist's final years, wrote this biography in 1831 with an intimacy no later biographer could replicate. This is Newton as his contemporaries knew him: the lonely child in Woolsthorpe building windmills and waterclocks, the young scholar at Cambridge devouring mathematics, the man who saw farther than anyone before or since. Brewster traces the arc from the legendary apple to the Principia, from the gold in the Royal Mint to the bitter theological disputes that consumed his later years. The prose carries Victorian reverence, but also genuine awe at a mind that reordered the universe. For readers who want to understand how Newton became the legend, this firsthand portrait remains essential. It captures not just what Newton discovered, but the strange, withdrawn, utterly singular man behind the discoveries.
