The Leech is a science fiction short story by Robert Sheckley, first published in December 1952 in Galaxy Science Fiction. The narrative follows Professor Micheals as he encounters a monstrous extraterrestrial leech that awakens on Earth and begins consuming everything in its path. As the creature grows uncontrollably, the military, led by General O'Donnell, attempts to contain it through drastic measures, ultimately leading to unforeseen consequences that question humanity's approach to the unknown.
