The Last Plunge

The frozen atmosphere of Uranus. A man descends into clouds that would crush an unprotected human, chasing a creature that exists only in the upper atmosphere of an ice giant. This is Nils Borgmann, and he is the only thing standing between his family and starvation. Sackett builds a brutal, indifferent world where survival demands impossible risks. Nils takes the dangerous job of hunting the air lion, a rare and fierce creature that can only be caught in the deadly heights of the Uranian sky. Each dive is a gamble with death, the hostile alien atmosphere, the creature itself, the crushing pressures that wait below. This is working-class desperation transposed to an alien world, where a father's love is measured in how close he can get to dying. The Last Plunge isn't interested in first contact or grand space adventures. It is a stripped-down story about what people do when they have no other choice. For readers who enjoy character-driven science fiction that prioritizes human stakes over cosmic ones.
