The Last of the Vikings

1066. The Norman army masses across the Channel while in the green English countryside, Ethel, daughter of a Danish thane, demonstrates her skill with the falcon. She is spirited, independent, untested. Then the armies collide at Hastings, and everything she knows: her home, her people, her certainties, is swept into the conquest's violence. John Bowling, writing in the late Victorian era, places a woman at the center of the most famous invasion in English history, asking what remains of individual will when empires crash. The novel traces Ethel's journey through loyalty and betrayal, love and duty, as she navigates a world where the old Saxon and Danish order is being ruthlessly rewritten by Norman sword and Norman law. This is historical fiction that understands the personal is always political: every marriage alliance, every choice to resist or submit, carries the weight of a civilization transforming.
