The Last Days of the Captain

Captain Keith Winters has evacuated a hundred colonies. His last command is Kulane, where something alien is coming and time is almost gone. The settlers are stubborn, the forest is hostile, and his orders are clear: get them off the planet. Then he meets Marilyn Roget, who won't leave without her husband and son, lost somewhere in the wilderness. Winters contemptuously agrees to help her search, expecting to find an easy argument for abandoning them. Instead, he finds himself drawn into a desperate hovercraft journey through alien terrain, hunted by predators, racing against a countdown to annihilation. The captain who prided himself on command without emotion must confront what he's been refusing to feel. Kate Wilhelm's 1960s classic crackles with tension: the mechanical hum of the hovercraft, the alien forest pressing close, the impossible choice between duty and love. This is science fiction at its psychological core, where the real enemy isn't the approaching threat but the man learning he's capable of softness.
