The Land of Cockayne: A Novel

In the sun-baked streets of Naples, the national lottery draws near, and the city's poorest dare to dream. Matilde Serao captures a single, electric afternoon where seamstresses, shoeblacks, and laborers gather with their numbered tickets, their futures pinned to a paper slip. Through vivid scenes of crowded streets and trembling hands, she reveals the lottery not merely as gambling but as a visceral religion for the desperate, a fragile architecture of hope built against crushing poverty. The novel follows characters like Antonietta, who dreams of eating meat every day, and countless others whose conversations expose both the desperate escape and the crushing disappointment the lottery provides. Serao's genius lies in her unflinching portrayal of how a game of chance becomes the only horizon for those whom society has already condemned. Written in 1901, this is a scorching portrait of economic despair and the human hunger for transcendence, one that still resonates wherever poverty and pipedreams collide.
