The Ladies Delight

A mischievous 1732 collection that pairs poetry with prose satire to dissect the mating rituals of early 18th-century England. The centerpiece, "The Arbor Vitae," deploys the Tree of Life as a sly botanical metaphor for love and desire, rendering romantic pursuit as both natural and absurd. The prose sections trace the natural history of this metaphorical tree while the final piece, "Ridotto al' Fresco," unleashes sharp criticism upon masquerades and balls where classes mix and desperate suitors make fools of themselves in pursuit of pleasure. Anonymous's voice maintains a knowing wink throughout, skewering the performances people put on for love while acknowledging the genuine impulses driving them. The result is a period piece that functions as social comedy, revealing the ridiculous theater of courtship before the Victorian era clamped down on such frankness.
