Novels

Translated by Linda Da Kowalewska

In a windswept Italian inn at the edge of the Mediterranean, two exiles find each other: Jacob Hamon, a weary Jewish traveler who has collapsed from hunger and exhaustion, and Jean Haba, a young Polish nobleman in forced exile from his homeland. What begins as a simple act of kindness by strangers soon blossoms into an unlikely fellowship between men who share the weight of displacement. Kraszewski writes with quiet compassion about the particular loneliness of the expelled, the way identity becomes a burden when one's nation or faith makes you a stranger everywhere. The inn at Sestri-Ponente becomes a liminal space where a Polish nobleman and a Jewish wanderer can speak openly of loss, memory, and the ache of belonging nowhere. This is a 19th-century novel that dared to see Jewish humanity when most literature reduced Jews to stock characters, making it both a moving character study and a quietly radical work of its era.

“chagrined by the sentiment of the greater part of my compatriots, a sentiment incomprehensible to me,--of shame at being Jews. In the houses of the wealthy there was not the slightest vestige of the faith and traditions of our fathers. The ancient customs had disappeared, the religious ceremonies were not observed. They concealed themselves to celebrate the Sabbath.””
