The Homicidal Diary

A respected criminologist finds a dead man's diary and begins killing. That's the nightmare at the heart of this early 20th-century horror, one of the earliest examples of the cursed artifact trope. Jason Carse is a man of science until he discovers the journal of Emil Drukker, a notorious head-hunter whose killings were legend. The diary should be harmless. Instead, Carse finds himself compelled to replicate each murder exactly as it's described, week after week, his own mind increasingly foreign to him. His friend narrates this descent with growing horror, watching a brilliant man transform into something unrecognizable. The supernatural mechanism remains deliberately murky: is Carse possessed, or has the diary merely revealed the darkness that was always there? This isn't a whodunit. We know from page one what Carse does and why he can't stop. The dread comes from watching a good man wrestle with the terrible knowledge of his own crimes. It endures because it asks questions we're still afraid to answer: What if evil is a parasite? What if it lives in all of us, waiting?
