The Higher Court

A young priest wanders through a blinding blizzard, suspended from his duties and his faith, in this forgotten novel of spiritual crisis from 1915. Father Barry has just faced his bishop and lost: stripped of his parish, his purpose, his future. As the snow buries the world around him, he spirals through memories of the cathedral he dreamed of building, the ambition his bishop called pride, and Isabel Doan, the woman who represents everything the priesthood denies him. The novel unfolds in a single night of anguish, as Barry confronts the question that will define whatever comes next: can he rebuild himself without the Church, or is he nothing without the cloth? Daggett writes with surprising psychological precision for her era, capturing the suffocation of vow-bound existence and the terrible freedom of having it torn away. This is a novel for readers who want to feel the exact weight of a life caught between heaven and earth, between duty and desire.
