The Heir to Grand-Pré

The novel opens on a becalmed yacht drifting through the hazy silver waters of Minas Basin, where young geologist Frank Winslow lies in the still air, his pipe smoke rising into a cloudless sky. When he encounters Marie Gotro on Pierre Island, the daughter of the last Gotro family patriarch, his examination of the ancient cliffs ends in a landslide that traps him beneath the rocks. As he recovers, a romance blooms between Frank and Marie, complicated by the lingering presence of Len Lawson, whose own feelings for Marie remain unspoken. Set against the windswept Nova Scotia landscape that once held Acadian settlements, Herbin writes with quiet deliberation about what it means to be an heir: to land, to lineage, to the weight of history pressing against the present. Grand-Pré is not merely scenery here but a character itself, its tidal shores and geological formations holding the sediment of generations.
