The Hearts of Men

A boy raised among women confronts the contradictions of Christian doctrine in this startling 1901 novel of spiritual crisis. When young Harry is sent to a strict religious school, the certainties his mother and aunts instilled crumble under the weight of biblical inconsistencies and the hypocrisy of pious authority. Fielding strips away the comfortable faith of childhood to reveal a God who demands blind obedience yet offers no logical answers to a questioning mind. As Harry matures, his crisis becomes not merely theological but existential: how does one live meaningfully when the foundations of belief have collapsed? The novel traces his journey from innocent acceptance to tormented doubt to something like hard-won wisdom, rendering every stage with psychological precision. For readers who have ever felt the anguish of faith slipping away, this is a brave companion.
