The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

This is a love story wrapped in myth, a Hawaiian romance that reads like a fever dream of the divine. Laieikawai, a chiefess of breathtaking beauty and sacred rank, is raised in the emerald paradise of Paliuli by a supernatural guardian, sheltered from the world until she must enter it. When suitors come from across the islands, her heart chooses unwisely, and her fall from grace is catastrophic. But this is not merely a tale of human failure. Through suffering and transformation, Laieikawai transcends mortality altogether, ascending to join the gods who have watched her all along. S. N. Haleole, writing in the shadow of colonial disruption, did not simply preserve a story, he resurrected an entire cosmology, weaving together Polynesian theology, the weight of chiefly power, and the terrible beauty of desire against duty. This is the great Hawaiian romance, a window into a world where love and divinity are indistinguishable, where the veil between human and god is thin as morning mist.
