The Great White Tribe in Filipinia

Written in the early 1900s by an American observer, this is a vivid personal account of colonial Manila and the Filipino islands at a moment of profound transformation. Paul T. Gilbert arrived on a transport ship into the chaotic bustle of Manila Bay, and what follows is his bemused, sometimes condescending, always illuminating record of a society in collision. He describes the local tribes and their customs, the markets and the attire, the Spanish colonial inheritance meeting American modernization. The book captures something no history textbook can: the texture of daily life, the sensory overwhelm of a foreign port, the assumptions and blind spots of an American encountering another culture head-on. For readers interested in colonial history, the American presence in the Philippines, or the Philippines itself at the century's turn, this is a fascinating primary source, an American's eye view of a nation reinventing itself under foreign rule.
