The Gospel of Evolution: From "The Atheistic Platform", Twelve Lectures

In twelve fiery lectures, Edward Aveling mounts a bold argument: evolution isn't just science, it's a better gospel. The Christian message, he declares, is neither new nor good , nearly two millennia old and offering nothing but faith in the supernatural. The Gospel of Evolution, by contrast, rests on observable truth, the unity of all living things, and the revolutionary promise of human progress through reason and action. Aveling, a Darwinian champion and son-in-law to Karl Marx, deploys the principles of matter, motion, and common ancestry to dismantle religious doctrine. He invites readers to abandon prayer and divine intervention in favor of empirical observation and rational inquiry. The result is both a philosophical treatise and a polemic, demanding that society choose between outdated faith and a scientifically grounded future. Now a historical artifact of Victorian-era materialism, the book remains essential for anyone curious about the intellectual wars that shaped modern secular thought. It speaks to readers who wonder how we arrived at today's science-religion tensions, and who appreciate the fierce conviction of thinkers who believed science could save humanity.
