The Golden Flood

In the gilded age of Wall Street, a young man named George Kitchell Grinnell walks into the Metropolitan National Bank and deposits a fortune in gold, then another, then another, until he has placed nineteen and a half million dollars in the bank's care. Bank president Mr. Dawson is mesmerized and disturbed in equal measure. With such sums, Grinnell already threatens to destabilize finance. With more, he could become something far worse: a force capable of shaking the entire economic system. Dawson watches, investigates, and grows increasingly uneasy about where this gold originates and what Grinnell intends to do with it. Written by Edwin Lefevre, who would later pen the legendaryReminiscences of a Stock Operator, this 1905 financial mystery crackles with tension precisely because it understands how fragile the engines of money really are. The golden flood is not merely wealth it is a weapon, and everyone from Dawson to the great moneyed interests can feel the ground beginning to shift.
