The Further Adventures of O'neill in Holland

Jack O'Neill is an Irishman with a problem: he's decided to learn Dutch from a grammar book so outdated it probably still considers the telegraph cutting-edge. Armed with this questionable education, he heads to Holland and immediately discovers that speaking a language and speaking it correctly are two very different things. Brown writes with a comic's timing and an essayist's eye for the absurd. O'Neill stumbles through Dutch society like a man navigating a minefield while reading the instructions backwards. Each misunderstanding builds into a set piece of escalating chaos. But beneath the jokes lies something sharper. Through O'Neill's foreign gaze, the familiar becomes strange, and the Dutch customs we take for granted reveal their inherent oddity. The book works because Brown never mocks his protagonist. O'Neill's failures are lovable, his confidence unshaken, his optimism indestructible. It's for anyone who's ever stood in a foreign country, mouth open, knowing the words are there but refusing to come out right.
