The Fantasy Fan, Volume 2, Number 3, November 1934

In November 1934, a seventeen-year-old named Charles Hornig edited a thin magazine printed on cheap pulp paper. That might sound unremarkable, except that this fanzine, The Fantasy Fan, represented something new in American letters: the birth of organized fantasy fandom. This particular issue, Volume 2 Number 3, carries contributions from two writers who would become towering figures in weird fiction. H.P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, already celebrated authors, lent their work to this amateur publication, blurring the line between professional and fan. The magazine pulses with the energy of a community discovering itself, featuring stories, poetry, letters from readers, and the kind of passionate discourse that would eventually birth conventions, fanzines, and eventually the modern fantasy publishing industry. To hold this issue is to hold a piece of literary archaeology, a glimpse into the moment when fans stopped merely reading and started building a world together.
