The Emperor of Elam, and Other Stories

These are stories about people who slip through the cracks of ordinary life and suddenly matter. The title novella introduces Michael, a forgettable man sent abroad on business who simply vanishes, leaving his wife Aurora to confront the unsettling question of whether she ever truly knew him. The remaining tales share this quiet devastation, characters caught between who they are and who they thought they were, between the lives they've built and the ones that might have been. Dwight writes with the precision of an anatomist dissecting social pretense, yet his eye carries no cruelty, only the tender amusement of someone who recognizes how absurd and fragile our self-deceptions really are. His prose has that early twentieth-century quality of measured irony, where a single observation about human nature can be both funny and melancholy in the same breath. These are stories for readers who prefer their fiction spiked with uncertainty, who want to finish a book and sit quietly, wondering about the people they barely know, even the ones closest to them.
