The Deacon: An Original Comedy Drama in Five Acts

Deacon Thornton arrives in Eastville for his niece's wedding with the best intentions and the worst timing. Unfortunately for the deacon, his nephew George has just been linked to a local robbery, his sister-in-law's family is in full dramatic attendance, and his own reputation for boisterous inebriation precedes him everywhere. As the wedding day approaches, misunderstandings multiply faster than the deacon can explain them away, while he desperately tries to maintain some dignity among thequirky household: his long-suffering wife Mrs. Thornton, his daughter Helen, and the charmingly scheming servant Pete who seems to know more than he's letting on. Horace C. Dale wrote this comedy drama in the late 19th century, capturing the chaos that erupts when family gatherings collide with scandal, suspicion, and one man's struggle to appear respectable while perpetually three sheets to the wind. The play operates as both a farcical romp through mistaken identities and a sharper look at what happens when respectable families try to bury their secrets. Dale has a playwright's ear for timing and dialogue, letting the humor emerge naturally from character rather than circumstance.
