Novels

In 1912, Wenona Gilman crafted a Gothic family drama where inheritance becomes a kind of imprisonment. Carlita de Barryos is beautiful, young, and deeply in love. Her mother, an invalid obsessed with her Pocahontas lineage, has spent Carlita's life warning her that the women in their family are cursed to suffer in love. The curse isn't supernatural in any obvious sense. It's something far more insidious: a mother's fear weaponized as prophecy, passed down through generations like an heirloom. When Mrs. de Barryos arranges to send Carlita away after her death to protect her from the curse's fulfillment, Carlita must choose between honoring her mother's terror and forging her own fate. The novel is at its most chilling when examining how love can be reframed as danger, how a family story becomes a cage, and how hard it is to break free from a narrative you've been told since birth. Gilman writes with sharp psychological precision about the way women historically controlled each other through mythology and fear.
