The Comic History of England

Gilbert Abbott À Beckett had a radical idea in 1850: what if history didn't have to be a punishment? This "comic history" takes aim at the deadly serious way Britons had been taught their own past, exposing the absurdities that were always there hiding in plain sight - the pompous monarchs, the pointless wars, the historians who took themselves far too seriously. With sharp illustrations by John Leech (who also animated the pages of Punch magazine), the book punctures solemnity while delivering actual historical substance. The humor is distinctly Victorian - arch, irreverent, and delighted to catch the powerful being ridiculous. It's a book that works as pure entertainment, but also sneaks in genuine insight about how history gets written and who it serves. Perfect for readers who enjoy clever wordplay, who want to see history's stuffed shirts deflated, or who simply want to learn something while laughing.
