The Christmas Gift: A Story for Little Folks
1869
A tender Christmas story from 1869 that captures the purest magic of the holiday season: the joy of giving. When city cousins arrive for the holidays, young Flora sees an opportunity to teach them something more valuable than any gift under the tree. Their neighbor Mrs. White is a widow struggling to feed her children through the cold winter months, and Flora proposes a radical idea: instead of receiving presents, the children will pool their money to bring food and supplies to a family in need. What follows is a charming adventure as the children carefully select provisions, pull together their modest resources, and make a lavish delivery that transforms a struggling household into one overflowing with holiday warmth. Oliver Optic writes with gentle humor and genuine heart, allowing young readers to discover that the greatest gift isn't the one wrapped in paper but the one given in love. This is the kind of book that makes Christmas feel like a miracle.
