The Brides of Ool

Ool has buried two wives. Both died mysteriously, leaving him haunted by grief and an unnamed dread he cannot shake. Now, on his honeymoon with a third bride, he watches her with the eyes of a man who has learned that love can be lethal. The science fiction setting of the 1950s provides the backdrop for a deeply human story: a commander trapped in his own history, unable to trust the woman beside him and unable to trust his own judgment. As the honeymoon progresses, the tension mounts between what is real and what is the residual trauma of loss. The novel explores how grief seeps into every future relationship, how suspicion becomes its own kind of prison, and whether any love can survive the ghost of those who came before. It is both a product of its era and startlingly contemporary in its psychological complexity.
