The Belt
1951
The Belt, published in 1951 by Wallace West, is a science fiction novel set on the fictional Caribbean island of New Patmos. It explores themes of social experimentation and dehumanization through labor, focusing on Jonathan Robertson's return to claim his inheritance. He discovers that the descendants of convicts are reduced to robotic laborers in a factory processing Lapis Lazuli. As Jonathan attempts to liberate these workers, he confronts the tragic consequences of his family's oppressive legacy and the deep-rooted curse that binds the island's inhabitants to their servitude.
