The Band Played on

A trombonist named McRae is ripping through a jazz standard at a roadside bar when the world suddenly dissolves around him. He wakes up in a dimension where the grass is purple and the natives are anthropomorphic ducks who have never heard of jazz. What follows is pure, uncut pulp imagination: the ducks capture him, he gradually earns their trust by sharing his music, and then an army of menacing 'animal men' arrives to threaten their civilization. McRae discovers his trombone isn't just an instrument but a literal key between worlds, capable of blowing open doorways through sheer sonic force. The climax is exactly what you'd expect from a 1940s science fiction magazine - an apocalyptic crescendo that blasts him back home. The story is slight, genuinely weird, and entirely unselfconscious about its ducks-with-tophats premise. For readers who want to see what science fiction looked like when it was gleefully unhinged.
