The Bail Jumper

The title carries weight. In 1914 Canadian literature, a "bail jumper" suggests someone fleeing consequence, and Stead uses this metaphor to explore what happens when a young man arrives in the small town of Plainville looking for a fresh start. Raymond Burton comes to work at Gardiner's general store, but small towns have long memories and even longer gossip. His kind heart draws him into conflicts he didn't ask for, and his romantic interest in the mysterious Miss Vane sets him against rivals with sharper elbows. As winter settles over the prairie town, tensions build between ambition and morality, between what people seem to be and what they actually are. Stead writes with keen observation about small-town dynamics: the casual cruelties, the unexpected kindnesses, the way community can both nurture and trap. This is a story about the costs of trying to live well in a place where everyone watches.
