The Awful Australian

Published in the early 20th century, 'The Awful Australian' by Valerie Desmond offers a critical examination of Australian society through satirical essays. Desmond, a foreign observer, critiques various aspects of Australian culture, politics, and identity, highlighting perceived arrogance and self-satisfaction among Australians. The book humorously addresses topics such as the incompetence of politicians, the unrefined Australian accent, and societal attitudes toward culture and beauty standards, reflecting a nation grappling with its identity and heritage.
