One of the oddest novels to survive the 18th century, this satirical tale pretends to be a translation from Arabic of a traveler's account of the Kingdom of Kofira. Zeokinizul, the young monarch, inherits a realm drowning in minister-level corruption and a queen whose religious fervor has been weaponized against him. What follows is a courtly nightmare: every romance is political, every affection calculated, and the race to occupy the king's bed becomes a gauntlet of manipulation and ambition. Crébillon, better known for his libertine novels, uses this absurd orientalist premise to dissect the toxic machinery of absolute monarchy. The satire is broad, the tone arch, and the title alone (translated from the fictional Arabic of the nonexistent Krinelbol) announces that nothing here is meant entirely seriously. It is a period piece, uneven and of its time, but bizarrely compelling for anyone who has ever wondered what lies in the forgotten margins of Enlightenment literature.
