The American Cyclops, the Hero of New Orleans, and Spoiler of Silver Spoons

The American Cyclops, the Hero of New Orleans, and Spoiler of Silver Spoons is a satirical poem by J. Fairfax McLaughlin, published in 1868. This work critiques a controversial military leader during the American Civil War, paralleling his character with the Greek myth of Ulysses and the Cyclops. Through humor and sharp criticism, McLaughlin exposes the hero's incompetence and moral failings, particularly during military campaigns in New Orleans, ultimately questioning the glorified narratives surrounding historical figures and calling for integrity amidst conflict.
