That Mainwaring Affair

On the eve of his 50th birthday, Hugh Mainwaring, a wealthy New York stockbroker, gathers his family to announce his heir: his young cousin, also named Hugh. But before the will can be signed, Mainwaring is murdered in his opulent home, Fair Oaks. The gathering becomes a trap, and the assembled relatives, servants, and one mysterious stranger become suspects in a case that will test every assumption about loyalty and blood. Barbour constructs a tightly wound puzzle box of inheritance, rivalry, and hidden resentments. Mrs. LaGrange, the housekeeper with secrets, hints at knowledge she won't share. Cousin Ralph moves through the margins of the family with unclear intentions. The arrival of a stranger on the very night of the murder suggests dangers beyond the circle of kin. This is American mystery fiction in its infancy, a genre being invented as the reader turns each page. For readers who crave the slow burn of classic detection, where motive and opportunity matter more than forensics, this novel offers a window into how our ancestors told tales of buried greed and violent inheritance.
