Thackeray
1879
Two Victorian titans, one biography: Anthony Trollope turns his incisive gaze to his friend and rival William Makepeace Thackeray, crafting a portrait that refuses sentimentality. Trollope knew Thackeray personally for years, and this intimate knowledge allows him to pierce through the mythology that gathered around the author of 'Vanity Fair' after his death. He examines Thackeray's early struggles, the years of rejection and financial strain before 'Vanity Fair' made him famous, and the complex man who emerged from that crucible: brilliant, wry, sometimes cruel, always observing. Rather than a reverent hagiography, Trollope offers a critical friend's assessment, analyzing not just Thackeray's life but his literary methods, his famously sharp satirical style, and the burlesques and ballads that lesser readers overlook. The biography treats its subject as a fellow craftsman rather than a monument, making it essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how one great Victorian novelist saw another.
