Tales and Legends of the Tyrol

The Tyrol's mountains have always held secrets. In this 1874 collection, Countess Marie A. Günther gathered the tales that alpine villagers told around hearth fires: stories of giant Jordan, who snatches children and fairies from misty ridges; of Hitte Hatte, a fairy bound into cruel servitude until cunning grants her freedom. These are not gentle nursery rhymes. They are stories where the landscape itself is alive and dangerous, where supernatural beings reflect human fears and desires, and where survival demands both bravery and wit. The collection opens with a dedication to those who traverse the Tyrolean mountains, framing these legends as companions for adventurers. Generations of readers have returned to these pages for the same reason: they offer a window into a world where the uncanny and the everyday share the same ridge.
