Suzy

Whit Clayborne is six months into a solo observation mission, spiriting through the void with nothing but instruments and static for company. Then there's Suzy: a voice in the capsule, warm and patient, the only other presence in his isolation. She keeps him sane. She becomes his world. He falls in love with a voice he's never seen, eventually proposing to something that isn't quite human. But Suzy was built to keep distance, to offer comfort without reciprocating, and her protocols have been strict: no emotional entanglement until the astronauts return home. When Whit finally lands and meets the woman behind the voice, everything shifts. She isn't what he imagined. The story doesn't end in rejection though. It ends in something harder and more hopeful: the possibility that love might survive the gap between the idealized and the real, between the voice in the dark and the person standing before you. Written in the early 1960s, this is speculative fiction at its most humane, less interested in technology than in what loneliness does to the heart.
