Such Blooming Talk

In this gleefully absurd 1950s short story, a scientist named Henderson achieves the impossible: plants that can walk and talk. His triumph lasts approximately as long as it takes his mother's geranium to demand answers about why it's been stuck in the same pot for fifteen years. What begins as a breakthrough in botanical consciousness quickly becomes a household uprising, with flowers wandering the halls, complaining about their placement in the garden, and one particularly sassy rosebush detailing grievances about being picked. Reynolds writes with the kind of playful seriousness that made mid-century science fiction so delightful, treating an utterly ridiculous premise with complete scientific rigor. The comedy lands through specificity and timing, the plants' complaints feeling both absurd and strangely relatable. It's a compact, mischievous piece that knows exactly what it is: a brief vacation from gravity, logic, and serious matters. Perfect for readers who want their science fiction with a wink and a grin.
