Struwwelpeter

Struwwelpeter

Heinrich Hoffmann

First published in 1845 as a Christmas gift for his three-year-old son, Heinrich Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter became one of the most notorious children's books ever written. The book consists of ten cautionary tales, each illustrating a moral lesson through increasingly horrifying punishments: a boy who won't comb his hair remains forever disheveled, thumb-suckers have their digits sliced off by a giant pair of scissors, and three cruel boys who mock a Black man are burned to ash by the sun's rays. Hoffmann, a Frankfurt physician, wrote the stories after failing to find suitable reading material for his son, unintentionally creating a collection so brutal it shocked Victorian parents into both horror and fascination. The book's unflinching violence, delivered with cheerful rhyming verse and garishly colored illustrations, has influenced generations of dark children's literature, from Roald Dahl to contemporary horror. Far from a simple relic, Struwwelpeter remains a disturbing mirror to the anxieties of adulthood: what happens when children refuse to obey.
