He has been everywhere, ignited everything, survived everything. Speaking of 1848 - the year revolutions swept Europe - he recounts his exploits with the intimate familiarity of a man who insists he was at the center of it all, lighting fuses and dodging bullets while history happened around him. This odd 1904 novel blends historical fiction with dark comedy to explore one man's attempt to construct a legacy from the chaos of revolutionary life. Is Stromboli a hero, a fraud, or simply a lonely old man telling stories to anyone who will listen? The novel doesn't entirely answer this question, and perhaps that's the point. It captures something true about how we remember our lives during times of upheaval - the mix of idealism, violence, absurdity, and the desperate need to believe it all meant something.
