Stories by Foreign Authors: Polish, Greek, Belgian, Hungarian

A window onto a vanished world of European short fiction, this collection gathers stories from Poland, Greece, Belgium, and Hungary, translations that first brought these voices to English-speaking readers in the late nineteenth century. Here are tales of lighthouse keepers seeking refuge from lives of wandering, of village rituals and ancient superstitions, of souls grappling with loneliness, longing, and the weight of their own history. The writers were witnesses to empires in twilight, to folk traditions not yet swallowed by modernity, and their concerns feel startlingly contemporary: the immigrant's hunger for belonging, the tension between tradition and progress, the small heroisms that go unnoticed. These are not polished masterpieces but something rarer: authentic artifacts from a time when stories crossed borders in船舶 and left their shapes changed. For readers who savor the foreign in foreign fiction, who want to feel the strangeness of another century rather than have it smoothed into familiarity.
