Step Lively! a Carload of the Funniest Yarns That Ever Crossed the Footlights

Step Lively! is a time capsule of American humor from the vaudeville era, when laughter was the currency of theaters from Ohio to the Pacific. George Niblo serves as your infectiously cheerful guide, a self-described "nonsense" seeker who walks twenty miles to thrash a man for fun, then needs an ambulance for the return trip. His stories mine humor from train rides, small-town encounters, and the peculiar personalities that populate the American landscape. A geography lesson yields the revelation that a strait "beats three of a kind." An apothecary visit spirals into absurdity. The tone is warmth itself, a performer genuinely delighted to share a laugh with his audience. These are not sophisticated jokes but something more disarming: genuine attempts at fun, told with a straight face and a twinkle. Niblo writes as he likely performed, inviting you into the lighthearted world of early twentieth-century American entertainment where the simplest observations could become comic treasures.
