Novels, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

A crashed spacecraft on Earth leaves behind a creature no human has ever seen: infant, alien, and utterly dependent. A team of scientists, led by Colonel Miller, raise this being they name Etl over years, watching him grow from bewildering hatchling into a sentient creature with emotions both familiar and strange. The novel is at once a tender story of cross-species parenthood and a tense meditation on fear of the unknown. When the team finally journeys to Mars with Etl, seeking his kind, they must confront not just the Martians but their own prejudices. The encounter that follows moves from dread to fragile hope, illustrating how easily the alien becomes the enemy, and how painstakingly we might learn otherwise. Gallun wrote this in the early 1950s, when humanity first dared to imagine meeting neighbors among the stars, and the book carries both that era's optimism and its anxieties. For readers who love first-contact stories built on patience and empathy rather than weapons.
