The journal kept aboard the bark Sophronia details a voyage from Boston to the east coast of Africa and Brazil (Apr. 1848 to June 1849). Home port was Salem, Mass.; owners were Ephraim Emmerton, John G. Waters, David Moore, Isaac Cushing, and Benjamin A. West; master was Brackley R. Peabody; log keeper was Ephraim A. Emmerton. It is a personal journal describing wind, weather, location, and seafaring life. It includes poetry by Emmerton. Bound with E.A. Emmerton's autobiography (1843 to 1860) and diary (1858 to 1861). Gift of the estate of Mrs. Lucy D. Emmerton; February 4, 1910. Digitized in 2021 with funding from the Salem Marine Society.
