Sonette nach dem Portugiesischen - übersetzt von Marie Gothein

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

In 1845, a semi-invalid poet who believed herself destined for spinsterhood began writing a sequence of 44 sonnets in secret. She called them "Sonnets from the Portuguese" to disguise their true nature: passionate love letters to the man who would become her husband. What began as resistance and doubt evolved into an extraordinary declaration of surrender to love. These are among the most beloved love poems in the English language, written by England's greatest female poet, and they still burn with their original intensity. Marie Gothein's translation preserves both the intricate sonnet form and the emotional electricity of the originals. The poems crackle with vulnerability, wit, and an honesty about desire that was radical for their time. This is not polite Victorian love. It is raw, consuming, and unafraid. Readers who surrender to these sonnets discover why Robert Browning called them the finest sonnets written in English since Shakespeare.
