Something Else Again

Franklin P. Adams was the wittiest man in early 20th-century New York, and this collection proves it. Written during an era when a well-turned verse could make or break a reputation in the city's literary salons, these poems blend classical learning with downtown cheek. Adams draws on Horace and the great Roman poets not to impress but to puncture pretension, using ancient forms to skewer modern anxieties about time, love, and the endless parade of social absurdities. The verse ranges from tender observations on romance to sharp satirical barbs at society's sacred cows, all rendered in precise, crackling language that rewards careful reading. Whether he's dissecting the futility of worrying about the future or parsing the contradictions of the heart, Adams maintains a lightness of touch that makes even his most incisive commentary feel like a conversation with a brilliantly sardonic friend. For readers who relish wordplay, historical wit, and verse that punches above its weight, this collection remains a hidden treasure.
