Wilbur Murphy is a photographer for "Know Your Universe!", a man who has made a career of making the infinite cosmos feel quaint and manageable. When he catches wind of a legend on the distant planet Cirgamesç, a mysterious figure who rides a horse to greet incoming spaceships, he sees exactly what he needs: absurd alien folklore with ratings written all over it. He books his flight. What he finds is something else entirely. Cirgamesç is not the picturesque backdrop for a charming human interest piece. It is a world of ancient customs, impenetrable social rituals, and a people who regard this bumbling earthling with polite, impenetrable amusement. The Horseman of Space is real, but he is not a publicity stunt waiting to happen. He is a key to something far stranger, locked in the planet's own ancient story. Vance, at his early peak, builds a world that feels genuinely alien, not just a human society with funny architecture, but a place where human logic simply does not apply. Murphy's certainties crumble one by one. What begins as a romp through interplanetary exoticism becomes something more unsettling: the slow, funny, humbling realization that the universe was not designed for television cameras.
