Sixty Folk-Tales from Exclusively Slavonic Sources

These sixty tales were gathered at a moment when the old Slavic world was vanishing. In 1890, collectors were racing to preserve oral traditions passed down for centuries before anyone thought to write them down. What survives here is a fragment of that vast archive: stories of kings and peasants, wolves and witches, clever maidens and foolish giants, all animated by a logic that feels both ancient and startlingly fresh. The tales move through a world where Baba Yaga lives in a hut on chicken legs, where the sun and moon are chased across the sky, where courage and kindness are rewarded and greed destroys. There are no grey moral zones here, no psychological complexity - only the stark clarity of a story told around a fire to listeners who knew exactly what they were hearing. The translation carries the cadence of oral tradition, the weight of generations compressed into a single voice. For readers seeking the raw material of fantasy, the bones beneath every modern fairy tale, this collection offers something increasingly rare: direct access to how humans once made sense of the world through narrative.
