Six Prize Hawaiian Stories of the Kilohana Art League

A window into late 19th-century Hawaiian life, these six stories capture a world on the cusp of profound change. Through intimately drawn characters like Kalani, an elderly man who risks his pride to ask neighboring haole families for a new coat after damaging his only one while working his garden, Dillingham reveals the quiet dignity of people navigating poverty and cultural upheaval. The opening story follows Kalani as he hides his plan from his wife Nalima, attending church faithfully despite their circumstances, his desire for decent clothing really a yearning to hold onto his sense of self. When the Hamilton family responds to his need with generosity, the story illuminates how kindness moves between cultures in small, human moments. These are not dramatic tales but something more valuable: careful observations of ordinary lives, preserved like specimens in amber. Dillingham writes with evident affection for her subjects, rendering their struggles and small victories with tenderness. For readers who value historical fiction that illuminates forgotten lives through patience and compassion rather than spectacle.
