Short and Sweet: A Comic Drama, in One Act

Victorian domestic comedy at its most delightfully absurd. Two couples, the Sweets and the Shorts, share lodgings near the Crystal Palace in this one-act gem from 1861, where marital politics become a comedy of errors. Mr. Sweet, irritated by his friend Mr. Short's apparently blissful home life, decides to reassert his dominance over his own household, a decision that triggers chaos when he mistakenly believes his wife and Mr. Billington are engaged in a romantic entanglement. What unfolds is a sharp, sparkling satire of Victorian marriage, where domestic harmony exists only as a fragile pretense, and husbands wage petty wars of will against wives who wield far more power than they acknowledge. Troughton understood that the funniest battles are the ones fought over nothing, and his characters bicker with a vigor that feels remarkably fresh over a century later. The play's saving grace is its warmth: beneath the farcical misunderstandings lies genuine affection, and the resolution offers both laughs and a surprisingly tender observation about what holds marriages together.
