Shirley

Shirley is an 1849 social novel by Charlotte Brontë, her second published work following Jane Eyre. Set in Yorkshire during the industrial depression of 1811-1812, the narrative explores the impact of the Luddite uprisings on the textile industry. The novel addresses themes of gender, class, and social change in a tumultuous historical context, highlighting Brontë's critique of societal norms and her focus on women's roles in society.
