Sheared Cream O' Wit: A Classified Compilation of the Best Wit and Humor

Here is wit harvested across four decades, sorted and sifted until only the sharpest remains. Carl J. Mittler spent forty years clipping laughter from newspapers and magazines, assembling this classified anthology of quips, limericks, and anecdotes that move from the pulpit to the parlor. The characters who populate these pages bishops, maids, preachers, and servants are caught in moments of cleverness, their exchanges preserved like insects in amber. This is humor from an era when a well-turned phrase was a social weapon and wit demanded wit to answer. The book spreads what Mittler calls the gospel of laughter, offering up humor as communal medicine. Whether you encounter it at an office break or a family gathering, this compilation promises the same thing it promised in 1923: a brief escape into warmth, wordplay, and the peculiar pleasure of watching someone say exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment.
